Preparing for storms

Wind and flooding during storms cause a lot of damage and power outages. It's important to be prepared. Municipal employees, firefighters and other teams like NB Power do their utmost to restore power as quickly as possible. However, this can take several hours, sometimes days or even weeks, depending on the extent of the damage.
For your safety, here's some information to help you prepare for the wind and flooding that often accompany storms. We've also listed a few points to help make the work of our crews easier.
- Plan a safe place to go in case of an impending storm, especially if you live in a flood zone. Find out about local shelters.
- It's best to be prepared for the worst, as storms can be unpredictable.
- Don't cross a flooded or debris-strewn road.
- Avoid unnecessary travel in the community. Teams are already overloaded and may have difficulty helping you in an emergency if something happens to you.
- During storms, stay away from the coast or beaches, as there is a risk of being swept away by the waves.
- For light in the event of a power cut, battery-powered lamps are better than candles, which can catch fire.
- If trees have fallen in your yard and are touching wires, leave them alone and wait for NB Power to take care of them.
- During power outages, stay away from electrical wires in your yard and on the road. Do not use a BBQ or camping stove indoors.
- If you use a generator, find out how to use it safely, and make sure it's well away from the house and away from air vents. Follow this link for safe use. Learn more about safe use.
