Reading Between the Lines – Reading and Writing Workshop
Janick Burn is an artist, writer, and curator originally from Outaouais/Anishinabewaki who has been living in Montréal/Tio’tia for several years. Her practice-based and theoretical research focuses on the relationship between the body and the frame, which she approaches through a reflective engagement with performance, image-making, and writing. She explores the off-screen/off-frame space, which she conceives of (when chosen) as a space of freedom where one can emancipate oneself from the confines of the frame—of the image, of society, of the norm. In recent years, she has become interested in publishing as an artistic practice and an alternative exhibition format. She curated the group exhibition Exposer avec l’autoédition (To Expose Through Self-Publishing) (AdMare, 2022; Arprim, 2023) and has completed several artist residencies (Dare-Dare and Est-Nord-Est, 2023; La Chambre blanche, 2024; AdMare, 2025; Sagamie, 2026). She regularly publishes exhibition reviews in Le Sabord and other contemporary art journals.
Reading Between the Lines is a reading and writing workshop that invites participants to observe, explore, and collectively reflect on different strategies for engaging with the off-screen/off-frame space through the experience of reading. Together, participants will consider how reading can help us think about what lies beyond the text, and even influence the ways we inhabit the world. These questions will be approached through an open and subjective understanding of artistic practice.
Lasting approximately two hours, the workshop consists of individual reading and writing exercises of varying lengths, followed by informal group discussions.
No previous experience or special preparation is required to participate. Just bring something to write with!
